Study of ion beam induced defects in ZnO by using slow positron beam

Undoped ZnO crystals were implanted with Al$$^+$$, N$$^+$$ and Al$$^+$$/N$$^+$$ respectively. The implantation induced defects and their recovery were studied using a variable energy slow positron beam. Vacancy clusters are introduced in all the implanted samples. The annealing of the defects in Al$$^+$$-implanted sample shows two stages, which might be due to the agglomeration of vacancy clusters and their recovery, respectively. Large voids are also observed when the Al$$^+$$ dose is higher than 10$$^{14}$$ cm$$^{-2}$$, which suggest amorphization of ZnO. However, for both the N$$^+$$-implanted and the Al$$^+$$/N$$^+$$ co-implanted sample, the annealing behavior of the defects shows four stages. The last two stages might be related with the formation and recovery of nitrogen related defect complexes. Hall measurements show a strong n-type conductive layer after Al$$^+$$ implantation and annealing, suggesting that all the Al$$^+$$ ions are activated. However, for the N$$^{+}$$-implanted and Al$$^+$$/N$$^+$$ co-implanted ZnO, the implanted layer still shows n-type conductivity. The possible reason is discussed.

Influence of H and He on corrosion behavior of ion irradiated stainless steel

The aim of this work is to evaluate corrosion behavior of irradiated materials for mechanistic understanding of irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC). Solution annealed high purity Fe-18Cr-12Ni specimens were used in this study. H and He were implanted during irradiation with 12MeV Ni$$^{3+}$$ ion at 573K. After corrosion procedure, the specimens were examined with atomic force microscope (AFM) to evaluate corrosion behavior. It was shown that the corroded volume of irradiated area increased with radiation damage. H implantation at lower temperature accelerated corrosion. He implantation suppressed corrosion.

The JAERI AVF cyclotron provides a variety of ion beams especially for the research in biotechnology and materials science. Several cyclotron technologies such as cocktail beam acceleration, a uniform irradiation in a wide area and beam pulsation have been developed so far. A flat-top acceleration system for the JAERI AVF cyclotron has been designed to minimize the energy spread mainly for a microbeam production. The flat-top acceleration using fundamental and fifth-harmonic frequencies for an acceleration voltage is an excellent technique to reduce the energy spread.

Study of the beam meander at JAERI cyclotron

On JAERI cyclotron, it is needed to study the problem that is the meander of the beam envelope along the micro-beam line and the other beam lines. The causes of the meander mainly come from that the position and direction of the beam are not alignment with designed beam trajectory. We evaluated the beam meander at HZ line. The verticaly 3mm beam shift at the cyclotron exit is amplified to 60mm at the beam line. This cause of beam shift comes from the level down of several magnets near the cyclotron, we corrected already. For improvement of the beam meander on the horizontal plane, we installed the steering magnet. Roughly we could correct the beam meander. Although there are slightly the beam meander. We will study more about this problem.

A snow crystal scavenges earozol particles and trasfer various elements in atomosphere through heterogenious nucleation. The snow has many complicated crystal shapes which results in difficulty in comparison of its environmental purification function directly with that of raindrops. The replica of individual snow crystal grain was prepared by their immobilization on the collodion film. The replica samples were analized by micro-PIXE at JAERI and PIXE st Kyoto university. The following results are obtained: (1) Size(circumscribed diameter) of individual snow crystal are in the range of 0.12-2.5mm, (2)snow crystal grows from hexagnal plate to dendritic sectored plate, (3) major elements captured by a snow crystal are Si,S,K,Ca,Fe,S, (4)there is relation between snow crystal size and captured-element masses. The result leads us to presume the chemical inner-structure and the elemental mixing state in/on single snow crystal.
